One of the benefits of using Interceptor Plus heartworm prevention for your dog is that it also protects your pet from other common intestinal parasites. Hookworm, roundworm, whipworm and tapeworm aren’t just dangers for your dog—they can be transmitted to humans as well (ewww!).
There are several other non-worm parasites that can affect humans, and as it gets warmer and we spend more time outdoors, it’s good to be aware of them. They include:
Giardia: spread when an animal or person comes into contact with the feces of an infected animal. Using gloves while gardening, stopping pets from eating or rolling in wildlife waste can help prevent the spread of the parasite.
Coccidia: like giardia, coccidia is primarily spread through contact with infected feces or soil. Often it has no symptoms but can cause diarrhea in dogs. Some of the less-common species of this parasite may infect humans.
Toxoplasmosis: spread to people by eating undercooked meat, contaminated produce and by coming into contact with infected cat feces, this disease often has no initial symptoms. It can be very dangerous to pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems. Cats contract toxoplasmosis by eating rodents and birds, so keeping your cat indoors can help prevent the spread of the disease—and always wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning the litterbox.
